- What is Music Manager?
-
- Music Manager is a database application designed specifically for
- storing information about your music collection. Music Manager can
- collect up to 1000 record entries. Music Manager runs under
- Microsoft Windows 3.0 or 3.1 in protected mode.

- * Keep an inventory of your entire music collection
- (albums, CDs, cassettes, etc.)

- System Requirements

- Music Manager is designed to work with all systems that can run
- Microsoft Windows 3.0 or 3.1 in protected mode (Standard or 386
- Enhanced). It is recommended that you have at least 2MB or RAM
- memory and a hard disk. A mouse is also recommended. Although
- Music Manager will run under Windows with a EGA driver, a VGA
- driver or better is recommended.

- Installing Music Manager
- ------------------------

- To install Music Manager follow this one time installation
- procedure:
- 1) Copy MUSICMAN.EXE to your Windows directory or a directory that
- is listed on your path.
- 2) Copy MUSICMAN.HLP to the same directory.
- 3) Copy BWCC.DLL to your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory.
- 4) Add Music Manager to a group in the Program Manager. This can be
- done as follows:
- - Open the Program Manager group window for the group you
- want to add Music Manager to
- - Choose New from the File menu. The New Program Object
- dialog box will appear
- - Select Program Item and choose OK
- - Type Music Manager in the Description text box
- - Type MUSICMAN.EXE in the Command Line text box
- - Choose OK

- You can then start Music Manager by double clicking on the Music
- Manager icon from Program Manager.

- Starting Music Manager
- ----------------------
-
- Starting Music Manager can be done in several different ways. One
- way is to double-click on the Music Manager icon as defined in the
- previous section. Another way is to choose Run from the File menu
- on Program Manager and then type in MUSICMAN.EXE. If you are using
- File Manager, you can start Music Manager by double-clicking on the
- filename MUSICMAN.EXE.

- Music Manager currently supports only one parameter for passing
- during the program startup and that is a Music Manager database
- file. To have a database file loaded automatically any time that
- Music Manager is started modify the properties listing for Music
- Manager.
-
- To change the properties for Music Manager:
- 1) Select the Music Manager icon.
- 2) Choose Properties from the File menu.
- 3) Move the cursor to the end of the line in the Command line edit
- box.
- 4) Type in the full path of the Music Manager database file.
- 5) Press OK.

- Accessing Online Help
- ---------------------

- Online help is supported by Music Manager. You can get context
- sensitive help on any menu item by highlighting the menu item and
- then pressing the F1 key. You can also access help by selecting
- any of the Help menu items located under the Help menu or by
- clicking on the Help buttons located in the dialog boxes.

- MANAGING MUSICMAN DATABASES

- Creating a new database
- -----------------------

- This option is only required for creating a new database if Music
- Manager is currently loaded with another database. To clear the
- current database from memory and to reset Music Manager's
- environment to settings for a new database, choose New from the
- File menu.
-
- Music Manager automatically assigns the extension .MMD to Music
- Manager database files.

- Opening an existing database
- ----------------------------
-
- 1) Choose Open from the File menu
- 2) Move to the Directories list box and choose a directory by
- single clicking the selection.
- 3) Move to the Files list box and choose a file by single clicking
- the selection.
- 4) You can also type in the full path and filename in the edit box.
- 5) Choose OK to load the file or Cancel to abort the operation.

- Note: Double-clicking produces the same effect as a single-click
- followed by OK.

- Saving a database
- -----------------

- To save the current database loaded in memory under the same name,
- choose Save from the File menu.

- To Save a new file or an existing file under a new name:
- 1) Choose Save As from the File menu
- 2) To save the new file in a different directory, move to the
- Directories list box and choose a directory by single clicking
- the selection.
- 3) To save the new file under an existing file, move to the Files
- list box and choose a file by single clicking the selection.
- 4) You can also type in the full path and filename in the edit box.
- If no extension is given for the filename, Music Manager will
- use "MMD".
- 5) Choose OK to save the new file or Cancel to abort the operation.

- Printing a database
- -------------------

- 1) Choose Print from the File menu
- 2) Click on the FileName check box to have the file name displayed
- as a header for the output
- 3) Click on the Page check box to have the page number printed on
- the bottom of each page
- 4) Select the Range:
- - To print the entire database click on the All radio button
- - To print a range of records click on the From radio button
- and enter the 1st record to print and the last record to
- print. (Hint: if you have the View Index set, each record will
- contain an index number)

- The printed listing will contain only the fields selected for
- printing from the Options/Print configuration.

- Changing Printers and Printer Options

- 1) Choose Printer Setup from the File menu.
- 2) In the Printer box, select the printer you want to use from
- the list.
- 3) To set the options specific to your printer driver, choose the
- Setup button, and set the options as needed.
- 4) In the Printer Setup dialog box, choose the OK button or Cancel
- to abort the operation.

- Displaying record indexes
- -------------------------

- To display the record index for each field choose Index from the
- View menu. The menu item will toggle the indexes on and off
- depending on the previous state. A check mark next to the menu
- item indicates that the current setting is on.

- Displaying all record fields
- ----------------------------

- To view all fields in each record choose All from the View menu.
- This will set a check mark next to the menu item.

- Displaying selected record fields
- ---------------------------------

- To view only selected fields in each record choose Partial from the
- View menu. This will display a dialog box listing all the possible
- fields to display.
-
- To make a partial selection:
- 1) Select each field to view by clicking on the box next to each
- field name.
- 2) To accept the selections choose OK, otherwise choose CANCEL to
- abort the operation.

- Selecting all the fields in the dialog box results in the same
- operation as selecting All from the View menu.

- Displaying the status bar
- -------------------------

- To display the status bar choose Status Bar from the View menu.
-
- The status bar displays a brief help description any time a menu
- item is highlighted. The status bar also displays status messages
- on long operations such as sorting, and reading/writing to files.
- You will also notice the Total Record count is continously shown
- on the status bar.
-
- NOTE: The total record count can also be obtained from the About...
- menu item under the Help menu.

- PERFORMING RECORD OPERATIONS

- Adding Records
- --------------
-
- 1) Choose Add from the Record menu or press Ctrl-A. You can also
- press the Insert key from the keyboard. You can use your mouse
- to move to different fields by clicking when the mouse's cursor
- is in the desired field or by pressing the Tab Key.
-
- 2) Enter the name of the Artist or Band in the Artist Field
- Ex. Beatles, Billy Joel, etc.
-
- 3) Enter the name of the Title in the Title Field
- Ex. Greatest Hits
-
- 4) Enter the name of the Record Label in the Label Field
- Ex. Columbia, Warner Bros., etc.
-
- 5) Enter the name of the Classification in the Class Field
- Ex. Rock, Jazz, Classical, etc.
-
- 6) Enter the Format of the music record in the Format Field
- Ex. Album, Compact Disc, etc.
-
- 7) Enter the Sort Name in the Sort Field. This field allows
- a unique field to be used for primary sorting. For example
- if the Artist name is "The Cars", instead of defining the
- Artist field as "Cars, The", define as titled and then use
- the Sort Name field to define "Cars" as the primary sort
- name.
-
- 8) Enter the Year the Record was produced in the Year Field.
-
- 9) The final field in the Add Record dialog box is labeled
- Keywords. This field is used to defined unique keywords
- that can be associated with the record being added.
-
- A future implementation will take advantage of the keyword
- field and the rest of the fields by performing a search
- or query on the database based on user defined criteria.
-
- 10) Choose Add to add the new record to the database. The Title bar
- will reflect the addition by incrementing the record counter.
-
- 11) To exit the dialog box, choose Done.
-
- If sorting is set for automatic sorting, the new record(s) is
- added to the current database listing in the sorted order
- defined by the sort options. Otherwise, the record(s) is added
- to the end of the listing and sorted during the next sort
- operation.

- Deleting Records
- ----------------

- 1) Select the record to delete by moving the mouse cursor to any
- field associated with the record and then clicking the left
- button to highlight the record.
-
- 2) Delete the record by selecting Delete from the Record menu or
- press Ctrl-D. You call also press the Delete key from the
- keyboard.
-
- 3) If confirmation is turned on for deletions, you will be prompted
- to verify the delete operation, otherwise the record is
- automatically deleted. (SEE Selecting Confirmation Options)

- Editing Records
- ---------------
-
- 1) Select the record to edit by moving the mouse cursor to any
- field associated with the record and then clicking the left
- button to highlight the record.
-
- 2) Edit the record by selecting Edit from the Record menu or press
- Ctrl-E. You can also edit the record by double-clicking on the
- record you wish to edit.
-
- The Edit Record dialog box will be displayed containing all the
- data associated with the selected field. Make changes to any of
- the fields.
-
- 3) Choose OK when editing is completed. CANCEL aborts the
- operation.
-

- MOVING THROUGH A DATABASE
-
- Scrolling through the records
- -----------------------------
-
- Using the Mouse: Scroll though the database listing with a mouse
- by pressing the left button on the mouse down and then dragging the
- mouse up or down the window across the record listing. Every time
- the mouse crosses a new record that record is highlighted. If you
- continue to hold the left mouse button and then move the cursor
- outside the display window (above or below), the window will start
- to scroll. You can also use the scroll bars to scroll the display.
-
- Using the keyboard: You can also use the keyboard to scroll
- through a database listing. To scroll up or down one line use the
- arrow keys. The highlighted bar will move up or down until the
- last displayable record is reached before the window is scrolled.
- You can also use the Page Up and Page Down buttons to scroll the
- window. To move from the leftmost to the rightmost part of the
- display use the Home and End keys respectively.

- Searching for records
- ---------------------
-
- You can find records by searching for a string that may be
- contained in a field of a record. Do this by using the Find
- command on the Search menu. You can start a search at any point in
- the listing. Music Manager searches forward from the current
- selected record to the end of the listing. If the end of the
- listing is reached without finding the search string a message is
- displayed.
-
- To search for a record:
- 1) Choose Find from the Search menu. The Find dialog box appears.
- 2) In the Find box, type the string you want to search for.
- 3) If you want the search to be case sensitive, click on the Case
- Sensitive check box. Only records containing the search string
- exactly as typed will set a match.
- 4) To select the fields to search:
- - Click on the Fields button and a Search Fields dialog box will
- appear
- - Select only the fields you want the search to perform the
- operation on. NOTE: Only the fields that are currently
- displayed are allowed to be selected. All others are greyed
- out.
- - Press OK to accept the changes or CANCEL to abort
- 5) Press OK to perform the search or CANCEL to abort the operation
-
- NOTE: To find the next occurrence of the string Press F3 or select
- Find Next from the Search menu.

- Going to a specific record
- --------------------------

- 1) Choose the Go To from the Search menu or press F4. Music
- Manager displays the Go To dialog box.
- 2) Type the record index of the record to go to.
- 3) Press OK to goto the record or CANCEL to abort the operation

- CONFIGURING OPTIONAL SETTINGS

- Selecting confirmation options
- ------------------------------

- The are two operations that can be configured to cause a
- confirmation to be performed before attempting to perform the
- operation. This allows the user to verify these critical
- operations.
-
- The first operation that can be set for confirmation is deleting
- records. The user can specify whether or not to confirm each delete
- operation.
-
- The second operation that can be set for confirmation is the
- operation that saves the current Music Manager environment settings
- such as window position, sort options, current directory, etc...
- This operation is performed when Music Manager is exited. The user
- can specify whether or not to confirm this operation.
-
- To configure these options, select the Confirmation menu item from
- the Options menu. Toggle the check boxes on and off by clicking on
- the box next to each option.
-

- Selecting sort options
- ----------------------
-
- Music Manager can sort the currently loaded database with up to 3
- unique fields. This allows a greater degree of unique sorting to
- occur on the database. The first field is required, but the 2nd
- and 3rd fields are optional.
-
- 1) Select Sort from the Options menu and the Sort dialog box will
- appear.
-
- 2) Select the FIRST field by clicking on the radio button beside
- the field name. Select Ascending or Descending to specify
- the sort order.
-
- 3) Select the SECOND field by clicking on the radio button beside
- the field name. Select Ascending or Descending to specify
- the sort order.
-
- Select NONE if you do not want to sort by a second field.
-
- 4) Select the THIRD field by clicking on the radio button beside
- the field name. Select Ascending or Descending to specify
- the sort order.
-
- Select NONE if you do not want to sort by a third field.
-
- 5) Check the "Sort Records Automatically" checkbox if you would
- like to have Music Manager perform a sort on the list each time
- a record is added or edited.

- 6) Choose OK to accept to perform the sort or CANCEL to abort.

- Selecting print options
- -----------------------

- Music Manager allows you to select the fields that will be printed
- for each record when a Print request is performed on the database
- loaded.

- 1) Select Print from the Options menu and the Print options dialog
- box will appear.

- 2) Select the fields to print by clicking on the check box next
- to the individual fields. Clicking on the check boxes toggles
- the selection on and off.

- 3) Choose OK to accept the changes or CANCEL to abort.

- Changing the Current Display Font
- ---------------------------------

- 1) Choose Fonts from the Options menu.
-
- 2) Select the name of the new font from the Font Name list box.
-
- 3) Select the preferred size from the Size list box. Depending on
- the font, the Size list boxe may sometimes contain only one size
- and in a fiew cases no sizes.

- 4) Select the attribute preferences from the Font Style check
- boxes.
-
- 5) Choose OK to accept the new font preferences or Cancel to abort
- the operation.

- NOTE: Each time a Font Name, Size, or Fonts Style is changed the
- sample window in the lower left part of the dialog is updated
- to show what the display will look like.
